There I was all set to embed a YouTube Video in my post because it was controversial and thought-provoking and when I finally get around to writing about it, there has been enough backlash via the internet that its creators have taken it down… WTF. So all I have is this damn screenshot I managed to snag off of Huffington Post’s article about the video’s subject.
The Girl Scout above, Taylor from Ventura California, made a protest video urging America to boycott the infamous Girl Scout cookies that come around every year to raise money for The Girl Scouts of America organization. Why would a member of the Girl Scouts want to limit or totally destroy cookie sales that would benefit her own organization? Good Question..
Taylor claims in her video that it is because of the controversial decision of one Colorado based troop to include a transgender 7-year-old child into their ranks. Taylor, and apparently others, disagree with a ‘boy’ joining the Girl Scout troop that is supposed to be an all girls institution. According to Taylor, “Right now, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A…is not being honest with us girls, its troops, its leaders, its parents or the American public,” because they have compromised the “all girl experience” by admitting a transgender young person.
She also provides a plug for Honest Girl Scouts, a group apparently “concerned with the alarming choices GSUSA has been making,” and “advocating for a change back to simply building girls of good character.”
So I am assuming that, in their opinion, admitting little Bobby Montoya (the transgender Colorado Girl Scout) was not a move that reflected ‘good character.’ Although it seems that bigotry and discrimination somehow manage to sneak under the fence despite the scrutiny of Honest Girl Scouts and their petite soldiers of simply good character, like young Taylor here.
This is not the first time, however, that Montoya’s inclusion sparked some dissent in the Girl Scout community. In fact, when the decision first came out, several Louisiana troops disbanded and dissolved as a means of protest, saying that it was a dangerous situation for girls. Apparently intolerance and discrimination are “safe” though, don’t worry!
In my opinion, it is pretty messed up to be this up-in-arms over a 7-year old in another state entering into a totally separate troop in the Girl Scouts. What happened to live and let live? I’m no Girl Scout, but I can’t imagine an organization that is supposed to be cultivating responsible and wholesome girls of good character standing for discrimination against this young and vulnerable transgender member. Actually… They DONT and that’s why Bobby was admitted in the first place. #sorryimnotsorry Taylor from California but not everyone is as closed-minded as you.
Bring on the F*cking tagalongs, I’ll send you a box or seven to show you whats up.
