About Us

ABOUT ACV:

AC Voice is a student-written, student-run web publication at Amherst College, located in the small town of Amherst in Western Massachusetts. AC Voice is a place to share our ideas, observations, and thoughts. We want to create a space that can both be respectful and push intellectual boundaries, an inclusive space where anyone can join the conversation.

We write about what we research, but we also write about what we experience. A great portion of the posts you will see on AC Voice are combinations of well-researched news analysis, first-person accounts, and editorial insights. Our writers discuss all aspects of student life at Amherst, but they also engage in issues entirely unrelated to the Amherst campus.

In keeping with the legacy of our predecessor site, She-Bomb.com, AC Voice is a specifically queer-friendly and feminist space. We do not tolerate posts or comments that are intended to be disrespectful to any community, to our writers, or to other readers. We reserve the right to delete or edit comments when they contain language or themes that the editors see as limiting to progress and thoughtful discourse.

OUR HISTORY:

She-bomb.com was created by BKflambroiled in the spring of 2011 because she wanted a journalistic space that was free from norms of misogyny and racism in mass digital media. She envisioned a forum for open dialogue between writers and the greater Amherst community, with fewer rules and less structure than a traditional print publication. She-bomb became a site where people were brought outside of the Amherst bubble, both to look at Amherst from a different perspective and to think critically about the world outside of the Pioneer Valley. At the end of spring semester 2012, the site was passed on to ConstantLy (Liya Rechtman) and Pandamonium (Craig Campbell). In talks with both graduating and incoming writers, they decided that the name She-Bomb no longer accurately portrayed all that was covered on the site. While we still are and will continue to be a feminist publication, we also tackle a much broader range of issues. The name AC Voice is meant to express that we – whoever our staff is on a given day – are Amherst College. We are feminist, certainly, and we are pro-queer as well. But we are also a lot of other things. We come from a wide array of backgrounds, and look at this school through many sets of eyes. When we post to this site, we create one, multivocal Amherst College Voice.
